How Rug Cleaning Pricing Works

Why area rug cleaning is not priced like carpet

Wall-to-wall carpet cleaning is typically priced by square footage of a fixed, in-place surface cleaned with one method. An area rug is a portable, freestanding textile object that gets picked up, fully inspected, tested, washed (often submerged), rinsed, and dried under controlled conditions before being returned. That is a fundamentally different workflow, and the variables that affect how much work a given rug requires vary far more than they do for a fixed floor surface. This is why rug cleaning pricing is generally assessed per rug rather than applied as a flat per-square-foot number.

Size and thickness

Larger rugs require more solution, more water for rinsing, more physical handling, and more drying capacity and time. Thickness and pile density matter too — a dense, high-pile hand-knotted rug holds more soil and takes longer to rinse and dry thoroughly than a thin flatweave of the same dimensions, even if their square footage is identical.

Fibre type

Fibre determines both the cleaning method and the level of testing required. Wool tolerates thorough washing but is pH-sensitive and needs longer, more controlled drying. Silk requires careful identification (it is easily confused with viscose, which behaves very differently when wet) and gentler handling throughout. Natural cellulosic fibres like jute and sisal need low-moisture approaches to avoid shrinkage and browning. Synthetics generally tolerate more aggressive washing but still need dye and colourfastness checks. Each fibre category changes the time and method involved, which is reflected in the cost. Construction

Hand-knotted rugs generally require more inspection and testing time than machine-made rugs because of the wider variability in dyes, foundation materials, and prior repair history across handmade pieces. Fringe condition, prior repairs, and foundation material (cotton, wool, or jute warp and weft) all factor into how a rug is handled and how much attention it needs during washing and drying.

Condition and contamination

A rug that is generally soiled from normal traffic is a more straightforward job than a rug with pet urine contamination, active odour, heavy staining, or signs of prior water damage. Logistics

Door-to-door transport is included at no charge within Chilliwack. Outside Chilliwack a flat round-trip transport fee covers our travel time and fuel — $55 for Abbotsford, Agassiz and Harrison, $75 for Mission and Hope, and $95 for Langley — with collections coordinated around route days. How a rug needs to be handled for transport (very large or very fragile pieces, for instance) can also factor into scheduling.
